GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and this time the date is locked in. That leaves about five months to set the stage: free up storage, check your hardware, dive back into Red Dead Redemption 2 and learn to tune out the fake leaks. Here’s the savvy fan’s checklist, step by step, so you’re not staring at a progress bar on launch night.
GTA 6: What’s Confirmed, What We’re Still Waiting On
Before you check a single box, let’s separate the solid from the speculative. The date and platforms are set in stone; the marketing calendar is half-locked; everything else is a waiting game. This table sums up where each piece of info stands as of mid-June 2026.
| Item | Status | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Release date | Confirmed | November 19, 2026 |
| Platforms | Confirmed | PS5 and Xbox Series X|S |
| Marketing campaign | Confirmed | Kicks off “this summer” 2026 |
| Trailer 3 | Expected | No date, likely this summer |
| Pre-orders | Expected | Not open yet |
| Price | Unknown | No official price announced |
| File size | Rumor | ”Just under 200 GB,” unconfirmed |
| PC version | Not announced | Absent from the console launch |
Step 1: Lock In the November 19, 2026 Date
First move, the simplest one: write down the date. After more than a decade of waiting and a slip from May to November, Grand Theft Auto VI is now set for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as Rockstar made official on its Newswire. On the May 21, 2026 investor call, Take-Two drove the point home: no new delay, no price revealed, but a marketing campaign starting “this summer.” What that means for players: Trailer 3 and the start of pre-orders should surface in the coming weeks. Our release date hub tracks every official signal as it lands.
Step 2: Check Your Platform, the PS4 Is Out
Here’s the part that stings for some: GTA 6 will run only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PS4 or Xbox One version, the last generation got dropped because its mechanical hard drive can’t feed the constant streaming of the Leonida open world. And there’s no point holding out for a PC version at launch: it hasn’t been announced and will follow later, like every major Rockstar game.
The good news, though: a standard PS5 is enough. Rockstar confirmed that all of Trailer 2 was captured in-game on a base console, with no exotic hardware. The PS5 Pro will add some polish (resolution, stability), but it isn’t required. If you’re still torn between the two machines, our PS5 vs. Xbox Series comparison lays out all the numbers.
Step 3: Make Room on Your Console
No official size has leaked, but an early-June rumor, from a since-deleted post, mentions a file “just under 200 GB” on PS5. Nothing confirmed by Rockstar, so take it with a grain of salt. The ballpark is plausible: GTA V already weighs a little over 86 GB on PS5, and Red Dead Redemption 2 demanded 99 GB back in 2018. Plan on freeing up 150 to 200 GB, maybe more once the day-one patch lands.
In practice, park your current games on a USB drive, or add an M.2 SSD (PCIe Gen4, 5,500 MB/s recommended) on the PS5 side, or an expansion card on Xbox. We break down the full storage math, console by console, in our file size guide.
Step 4: Get Back in the Groove with RDR2 or GTA V
Five months is also the perfect window to brush up on the classics. And the best warm-up isn’t GTA V but Red Dead Redemption 2: it’s the same RAGE engine lineage, with the radically overhauled Euphoria physics that GTA VI carries over and pushes further. Bonus, RDR2 regularly drops as much as 75% off on Steam. If you can’t decide, we compared RDR2 and GTA V to tide you over until November 19.
It’s also a good time to rewatch the two official trailers with fresh eyes. The second one, below, remains the best demonstration of what the new generation of RAGE can really do.
Step 5: Learn to Tell Real Leaks from Fakes
This is probably the most valuable tip between now and launch: roughly 90% of the “GTA 6 leaks” going around are fake. AI-generated fake gameplay (one racked up 8 million views in a day before being exposed), dressed-up GTA V mods, recropped clips from the 2022 hack, bogus “Trailer 3” videos… the noise is deafening.
The defense comes down to one rule: trust only a small circle of sources. The Rockstar Newswire for the official word, Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) and Tom Henderson (Insider Gaming, who describes the game as “content ready”) for verified behind-the-scenes intel. Everything else gets cross-checked or tossed. We laid out the method in our guide to sorting reliable leaks from fakes.
Step 6: Watch for Pre-Orders Without Falling for Scams
Last point, and it calls for patience: pre-orders aren’t open and no price has been shared. Any site claiming to already sell GTA VI is one to avoid. When the official launch arrives, this summer per Take-Two’s schedule, it’ll run through the Rockstar Store and the console storefronts. We round up what we know about editions and pre-orders as the details drop.
Until then, the best prep is still free: a date on the calendar, an SSD on a diet, RDR2 in the drive and a solid filter against fake leaks. The rest, Rockstar will tell us when the time comes.
