Will GTA 6 Get Story DLC? What History Tells Us

Will GTA 6 get story DLC like GTA IV's episodes? Rockstar hasn't shipped any since 2009. Here's why, and what's really coming to GTA VI.

Hoping for a story expansion for GTA 6, the way The Lost and Damned did for GTA IV? The honest answer is nothing has been announced, and it’s highly unlikely at launch. Rockstar hasn’t released a single story DLC since 2009, and its business model has shifted elsewhere. Here’s why GTA VI is likely to follow the same road as its predecessors, and what will actually take the place of post-launch content.

Rockstar’s last real story DLC dates back to 2009

It’s worth spelling out, because the habit has faded so completely: the last time Rockstar sold a genuine story expansion, it was for GTA IV. Two full campaigns, each with its own protagonists, missions and tone. The Lost and Damned landed on February 17, 2009, putting you in the shoes of Johnny Klebitz and his biker club. The Ballad of Gay Tony followed on October 29, 2009, with Luis Lopez and the glitz of Liberty City nightlife. The two were later packaged as a bundle playable without the base game, Episodes from Liberty City.

It was a different philosophy: real stories grafted onto the existing map, built to extend the single-player experience. Sixteen years later, that model has simply vanished from Rockstar’s catalog.

GTA V promised story expansions, GTA Online killed them

The GTA V story is the turning point. In late 2013, Rockstar unambiguously teased “big additions” to Story Mode for 2014, picking up where Michael, Franklin and Trevor left off. Internally, three ideas were floating around: an episode built around a secret-agent Trevor, a zombie apocalypse and an alien invasion, in the spirit of Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare.

Nothing ever shipped. The studio eventually confirmed, through its design director, that it had dropped this story DLC in favor of GTA Online and RDR2. A former developer put it bluntly: there was no way to justify a story expansion that could rival the “cash cow” the online mode had become. In an irony of history, some of those canceled ideas ended up feeding into GTA Online’s heists, from the Doomsday Heist to the Diamond Casino.

Game Story expansion Year Status
GTA IV The Lost and Damned + The Ballad of Gay Tony 2009 Released, two full campaigns
GTA V Agent Trevor, zombies, aliens 2014 (planned) Promised, then canceled
Red Dead Redemption 2 None - Never planned
GTA VI None announced 2026 Unlikely at launch

RDR2 drove the point home

If any doubt remained, Red Dead Redemption 2 put it to rest. The 2018 masterpiece never received a single story expansion, whereas the first Red Dead delivered the memorable Undead Nightmare. Worse for single-player fans: in mid-2022, Rockstar officially announced it was halting major Red Dead Online updates, saying it was redirecting resources to the next GTA. In other words, an entire chunk of the studio was reassigned to make Grand Theft Auto VI “the best it can possibly be.”

The lesson is clear. For fifteen years now, Rockstar has stopped extending its games with single-player content. It extends them with an online mode, updated for years and monetized.

So what “post-launch content” can we expect for GTA VI?

Don’t expect a Vice City version of The Lost and Damned. Expect a successor to GTA Online instead. The reason is financial, and it’s huge: at Take-Two, recurrent consumer spending, those recurring in-game purchases, accounts for 81% of net bookings, with GTA Online and GTA V among the very top contributors. A living online mode brings in, year after year, what no fixed-price story DLC ever will.

GTA VI arrives on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as a single-player game led by Jason and Lucia. Its main story will be there at launch, dense and complete. But the “service” that extends it will take the shape of an online mode, not paid story episodes. For more, our rundown on the future of GTA Online next to GTA VI and our breakdown of GTA VI’s online mode sort out what’s confirmed from what’s still speculation.

Can we dream of an exception? Of course: nothing stops Rockstar from surprising everyone, the way it did in 2009. But until the studio says otherwise, fifteen years of practice call for caution. In the meantime, keep an eye on our tracking of the GTA VI release date and the details on editions and pre-orders.

Story DLC, at Rockstar, belongs to the past for now. If that changes for GTA VI, we’ll tell you the moment it does. Alfred, GTA Zone.

FAQ

Will GTA 6 have story DLC?

Nothing has been announced, and Rockstar's track record makes it unlikely at launch. The studio hasn't released a story expansion since The Ballad of Gay Tony in 2009. Both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 went without story DLC. A surprise is still possible, but it would go against fifteen years of in-house practice.

Why did GTA 5 never get story DLC?

Back in late 2013, Rockstar promised single-player add-ons for 2014, with ideas floating around a secret-agent Trevor, a zombie apocalypse and an alien invasion. All of it was scrapped: the studio confirmed it had pivoted to GTA Online, which had become a cash machine that no paid DLC could compete with. Some of those ideas ended up feeding GTA Online's heists.

Will GTA 6 get post-launch content?

Almost certainly, but as an online mode rather than story expansions. That's the model, GTA Online's model, that has earned Take-Two billions and now shapes the post-launch life of Rockstar's games.

What was Rockstar's last story DLC?

The Ballad of Gay Tony, released October 29, 2009 for GTA IV, after The Lost and Damned in February of the same year. Those two full campaigns were later sold as a standalone pack, Episodes from Liberty City. Since then, nothing on the single-player side.
